For all of you looking at the new pack designs. The new design allows for a few options for the builder.
First of all its ability to allow the cells to cool passively is greatly improved over the old design as each cell is 95% exposed and there is space around each cell for air to flow and a way for air to get in and out of either end of the pack. So if you had marginal heat issues with the old style, and you switch over, the new style without fans will most likely give you more than enough cooling (provided you allow either end of the pack to breath).
The next level for those of you who are pushing your batteries even harder (as we did in Toro when we moved to 3" Mag motors from the Bosch) is adding active cooling. To do this you simply screw the fan plate on the front with two fans (pushing air into the pack). Now you have a lot of cooling power. You could even order another fan plate for the other end of the pack and add one or two fans pulling air through the pack if you thought you really needed it. (so far we never have)
A note about fans: The fans that you can order with the BattlePacks are the new 24v Rotron fans that are on the newest IFI speed controllers. These fans are the only ones that passed all the shock testing we put them through. It is of course possible to use other fans (like the half width 10mm thick version) or fans built into your robot and not attached to the packs if you so choose.
